Our approach
We want the NCLC Ready website to work with a keyboard, a screen reader, browser zoom, reduced-motion settings and common mobile assistive technology. We use WCAG 2.2 Level AA as our design and testing target. This statement is not a certification that every page or interaction fully conforms.
What the site provides
- A skip link to the main content on every page, and landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer.
- An accessibility tools button on every page (when JavaScript is on) to enlarge text, raise contrast, underline links, switch to a plainer font and stop animations. Your settings are saved on this device only.
- Keyboard access to every control, a visible focus outline, and an accessibility dialog that keeps focus inside, closes with Escape and returns focus where you were.
- Menus and answer explanations built with native HTML, so they work without JavaScript. The NCLC score tables and the practice answers are readable even if scripts are off.
- Pages in English and French with the correct language set, and French passages in the practice questions marked as French for screen readers.
- Animations only where they help, and none when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Layouts that reflow at narrow widths, including phone screens and high browser zoom.
How we check it
Every build is checked automatically: each page must have a language, one main heading, a title, a description and alternative text for images, and the site may not load anything from other servers. Before release we also look at pages in a real browser at phone and desktop sizes and try the main controls with a keyboard. Automated checks do not find every problem.
Known limits
- We have not yet completed testing with screen readers (VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA and JAWS). We plan to before the apps launch.
- Practice passages and questions are in French, as in the real tests. Explanations are in English or French.
- The mobile apps are covered by their own testing. This statement is about the website.
- Sites we link to, such as IRCC, the test organizations and the app stores, have their own accessibility practices.
